Mountain Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - April 19, 2023
Share
Earlier this week, while on the mountain trout streams, I saw several blue quill, march browns and sulphur hatches occurring. The water temperature was in the 50's and the native brook trout were actively feeding. I watch the surface of the stream to see which natural mayfly the trout are feeding on most, then I use the artificial fly which matches the naturals. Productive flies this week: Mr. Rapidan Dry size 14, Blue Quill Dry size 16, March Brown Dry size 14, Murray's Sulphur Dry size 16. If you want to fish a dry with a dropper then use a Copper John, Zebra size 14 or Mr. Rapidan Soft Hackle Olive Nymph size 16.
The water level is low and clear so hide your approach by staying low and sneak, sneak, sneak. You will get better water levels by going into the streams from the lower boundaries instead of coming off the Skyline Drive.
