Mountain Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - March 17, 2022

The Epeorus pleuralis hatch is occurring on the native brook trout streams prompting the trout to feed. Over the next several weeks there will be 3 different hatches occurring on these streams making April, May, and early June prime time to fish these streams. The Mr. Rapidan Parachute Dry size 14 and Blue Quill Dry size 16 are my two favorite drys to match these hatches. If you do not see rising fish, revert to your nymphs such as the Mr. Rapidan Emerger and Mr. Rapidan Bead Head Nymph size 14. Fish all of these on a 5X leader (either 7.5ft or 6ft). Another option is to fish a dry fly with a dropper below it so that you are covering all of the water. Don't forget to bring your hip boots and dress accordingly as the mountains are cooler than most areas.
The Skyline Drive is open and all of the streams are fishable. If you need help on access to these streams, see my book Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park. This book also covers the hatch charts and how to read the water.
Recently I put together a video where I discuss 17 of my favorite streams in the Shenandoah National Park. This is a digital video so upon completion of your online order, you will be sent a link to download so you can watch from home.
We are also booking guided trips in the Shenandoah National Park. Click here for more information.
