Mountain Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - Update May 28, 2022

UPDATE 5/28  Some of the roads into the lower boundaries of the Shenandoah National Park are closed due to flooding.  Hopefully they will open back up today or tomorrow.  With all of the extra rain received you will get better fishing by coming into the streams from the Skyline Drive so that you are getting ahead of the extra water levels. Posted 5/25   With the great hatch of sulphur duns coming off and the returning spinners that are present the last two hours of the day, it is not at all unusual to see 4 or 5 trout rising to take the naturals in some pools. By using my "pop strike" where I quickly release the pressure on a hooked trout in one or two seconds so the trout goes free, I often catch several trout in each pool.  The Murray's Sulphur Dry and Shenk's Sulphur in size 16 and 18 are great here.  If you want to fish a dry and a dropper add a Sulphur Nymph below the dry.  This is very effective. Of course we have been doing well on the Little Yellow Stonefly patterns and the Murray's Flying Beetle in size 16.  I am using a Classic 7.5ft 6X leader.

All of the Shenandoah National Park streams are in good shape if you come in from the Skyline Drive. The Park streams will be busy with the holiday weekend so be respectful, pick up your trash and if you plan to camp--no open campfires. 

The native brook trout streams in the George Washington National Forest are in great shape for fishing as well.  

The fly shop will be closed Sunday May 29 through Tuesday May 31 for the holiday.  We will resume normal hours on Wednesday June 1.
