Mountain Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - May 30, 2024
Share
The native brook trout streams are in great shape. The rains are keeping the water levels up and there are still hatches occurring. The Sulphur Mayfly hatch is getting heavier every day. The duns start coming off at mid-day and continue until dark. The spinners come back the last 2 hours of the day. This means the last two hours of the day there will be many trout feeding on the surface. Fish a Murray's Sulphur Dry size 16 on a 6X leader with a slack line cast. I enjoy this as much on the Letort as I do on the Blue Ridge Mountain streams. The Little Yellow Stoneflies are active so keep a Murray's Little Yellow Stonefly size 16 Dry in your fly box. The Mr. Rapidan Parachute size 16 and Murray's Flying Beetle size 16 are doing well this week as well.
For more information on the native brook trout streams in the Shenandoah National Park, see my book Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park. This includes the hatch charts, a chapter on reading the water, and in the back all of the streams are listed in alphabetical order with directions on access.
We are in the process of forming the dates for the Spring 2025 Fly Fishing Schools so those will be posted on our website within the next month.
