Mountain Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - September 14, 2022
Share
Earlier this week I checked a few different streams in the Shenandoah National Park. Some of the streams were still low and some were carrying extra water because of the localized rain storms that went through the area. I call this quick water as it comes in quick and leaves quick. Plan to come into the streams from the lower boundary accesses for better water levels. Now keep in mind these streams are still low, clear and tough to fish for this time of year. I just enjoy being in the mountains and if I catch a few brookies along the way that is a bonus.
Flies to have in the fly box: Mr. Rapidan Ant size 14, Murray's Flying Beetle size 16, Mr. Rapidan Parachute size 16 and H&L Variant size 16. Fish these on a Classic 7.5ft 6X leader.
The brook trout will start spawning in October so try to get as much fishing in as you can before then. I do not fish these streams during the spawning season.
If you need help on stream access, stop by the fly shop or see my book Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park. The Edinburg Ole Time Festival is this weekend, therefore the fly shop will be closed Saturday September 17.
