Smallmouth Bass Fly Fishing Report - October 18, 2023
Share
We have been able to land a few bass on poppers in the last week but most of our action has been on underwater nymphs so plan to have both in your fly box. The Shenandoah Blue Popper and Shenandoah Chartreuse Chugger size 6 are the preferred poppers. For underwater flies the Murray's Heavy Hellgrammite Black size 6, Bass Caddis Nymph size 6, Rubber Leg Nymph, and Murray's Crayfish are working well. If you are using a 6 or 7-weight rod, don't be hesitant to use a Popper with a nymph as a dropper below it.
Both the North and South Fork of the Shenandoah River are clear and fishable. The water levels are still low so wade carefully as the bass are wary. Over the next month the smallmouth action will slow down so try to get to the river as soon as you can. Bring your chest high waders!
If you need help on where to go, stop by the fly shop or call us. My book Virginia Blue Ribbon Streams lists a lot of trout and bass streams throughout Virginia if you are interested in learning more.
