Smallmouth Bass Streams Fly Fishing Report - April 19, 2023
Share
This week has been one of the most productive weeks so far for the smallmouth this year. The water temperature is increasing and the bass are starting to feed. Earlier this week my son Jeff floated the South Fork of the Shenandoah River and was able to land several bass by using the Murray's Heavy Hellgrammite, Murray's Cone Head Marauder size 4 (olive or black), Bass Stonefly Nymph and Bass Caddis Nymph. Fish all of these on a Fluorocarbon 9ft 2X Leader along the stream bottom, stripping every 5 seconds.
Both the North and South Fork of the Shenandoah River are clear and fishable. Since the river is so clear be careful on your wading so that you are not spooking the fish. If you need help on access, stop by the fly shop or see my book Virginia Blue Ribbon Streams.
