Smallmouth Bass Streams Fly Fishing Report - April 5, 2023
Share
With the 70 degree days, I have many customers trying to take some time to float the river. Some are having more success than others. Why? The water temperature is right on the border line of tempting the bass to feed. I have marked on my calendar that I caught a very large bass about the third week of April last year. So just be patient and keep trying. At this time of year the bass are holding in the 3-6 feet deep cuts immediately below the river-crossing ledges. The Murray's Olive Marauder and Magnum Hog Sucker size 4 are effective here. Cast these tight against the ledge. After it sinks deeply, I strip it 6 inches every 5 seconds to swim it along the stream bottom. The strike usually comes in the first 5 feet.
Both the North Fork and South Fork of the Shenandoah River are clear and fishable. If you have the time, try to plan a float/wade trip so that you are gaining access to all areas of the river. Keep in mind that there are three dams on the North Fork that are not legal or safe to go around so plan accordingly. There are more access areas to plan a float trip on the South Fork of the Shenandoah. If you need help on access stop by the fly shop or see my book Virginia Blue Ribbon Streams.
