Smallmouth Bass Streams Fly Fishing Report - August 11, 2022

This week I have been getting some excellent topwater action with the Shenandoah Blue Popper size 6. Fish this along the shady banks on a Bright Butt Leader 9ft 2X.
Many areas of the Shenandoah River hold great numbers of "spring minnows" (known today as sculpins.) Actually the name from my youth is a give away as to where the minnows live and where the bass go to feed on them. The hot spots are below springs and at the mouth of feeder streams. I have had many customers get some great fishing in these areas on a Spuddler size 6 or a Murray's Black Madtom Sculpin size 6.
The recent rains from yesterday have actually improved the water levels on the North Fork and South Fork of the Shenandoah River. As I crossed over the North Fork this morning it was nice to see the improved levels. There may be a few areas that might be a little cloudy on both Forks depending on how the heavy rain storms moved through the area but nothing that would cause it to be unfishable. If you need help on finding public access, stop by the fly shop or see my book Virginia Blue Ribbon Streams.
We only have a few openings left in our Half Day Fly Fishing Lessons for this summer. Wednesday August 24 and September 10
