Smallmouth Bass Streams Fly Fishing Report - August 24, 2022

It's that time of year--the Hexagenia mayfly hatch is on. The last two hours of the day, it is not unusual to have a dozen bass rising withing casting distance when this hatch is on. The hatch is inconsistent (or as I like to think "moody") so I keep going back to find the heavy hatches. The Mr. Rapidan Skater size 8 is an outstanding fly during the Hexagenia hatch. 

This week during our guide trips and fly fishing lessons we have had success with the Shenandoah Chartreuse Chugger, Shenk's White Streamer, and Murray's Olive Marauder. Be sure to fish the shady banks and around the grass beds where the bass have protection and many food sources.  Fish all of these on a 2X leader.

The North Fork of the Shenandoah River is clear and fishable.  The water levels at the Seven Bends State Park (both the Hollingsworth & Lupton access) are great for wading at this time of year. 

The South Fork of the Shenandoah River is clear and fishable.  Since this holds 3 times more water than the North Fork, the fishing has been better. You can either wade or float the South Fork. See my book Virginia Blue Ribbon Streams for access or stop by the fly shop.
