Smallmouth Bass Streams Fly Fishing Report - August 28, 2024
Share
The smallmouth bass streams are lower than a few weeks ago but we are still landing some nice smallmouth. The water temperature has been around 75 degrees so still warm enough to forego the waders. It is very clear and the bass are wary so sneak, sneak and try to fish early morning, late evening, or along the shady banks away from the bright sunlight. We are seeing Hexagenia mayflies so plan to have a Mr. Rapidan Skater size 8 in your fly box. The Shenandoah Blue Popper, Murray's Sunfish Slider, and Shenandoah Chartreuse Chugger are working well on topwater. Productive underwater nymphs and streamers include Rubber Leg Nymph brown size 6, Murray's Heavy Hellgrammite size 4 or 6, and Shenk's White Streamer size 4 or 6. The Next Minnow Changer in olive or white size 6 have been very successful for some anglers on the South Fork. NEW Fly Tying Class on Minnow Changer
I am still using a Murray's Bright Butt 9ft 2X leader but I have some anglers that prefer the Murray's Bass Bug Leader 9ft 2X leader because it has more subdued colors.
The North Fork of the Shenandoah River is clear and fishable. There is some very good access places from Mount Jackson to Woodstock to wade and possible take a short float in a kayak.
The South Fork of the Shenandoah River is clear and fishable. There are many areas to float on this river whether in a kayak or a john boat. If you need help on access stop by the fly shop or see information on our NEW BOOK below.
Fly Fishing the Shenandoah River for Smallmouth Bass provides information on access to the North Fork, South Fork, and main stem of the Shenandoah River along with a seasonal approach on what flies to use and when.
