Smallmouth Bass Streams Fly Fishing Report - June 12, 2024

The smallmouth feed on the shiner minnows on the shallow gravel bars and a Silver Outcast size 4 works well here. The Murray's Crayfish size 6 is working well around the cobblestone bottoms in water 2 to 4 feet deep. The Murray's Heavy Hellgrammite (black) size 6 is working in the deep water. If you are finding that you are not getting your flies to the bottom, try putting a split shot about 12-18 inches above the fly. Stripping these along the bottom is very effective. Fish all of these on a Bright Butt 9ft 2X Leader or if you need the extra help to get to the bottom fish them on a Fluorocarbon 9ft 2X leader.
We are starting to pick up a few on topwater on Shenandoah Blue Poppers and Shenandoah Chartreuse Chugger size 6.
The water is warm enough that you can wade without the waders if you choose. Both the North Fork and the South Fork of the Shenandoah River are clear and fishable. Wade carefully and try to study the river before entering. Don't stand in an area that you should be fishing. Try to be on the water early in the morning, the last 2 hours of daylight or fish around the shady banks in the afternoon.
We still have a few openings in our Full Day Fly Fishing Schools on June 21 and June 22. These start at 9am at the fly shop in Edinburg with a classroom presentation, then to the river for hands on instruction until about 5pm. We provide the fly rod/reel outfits for the school.
