Smallmouth Bass Streams Fly Fishing Report - March 31, 2022
Share
We have had several customers picking up some nice smallmouth bass in the past week while floating with a kayak or a boat on the South Fork of the Shenandoah River. April is the time of year that you can catch larger bass in the deep pockets that occur below the river-crossing ledges. These feeding stations provide the bass an abundance of food and protection from the full force of the heavy currents.
The Murray's Magnum Hog Sucker, Magnum Darter, and Magnum Bluegill in size 4 are perfect for these areas. Use a 9ft 2X leader in either the Bright Butt or Murray's Sinking Fluorocarbon series.
As of this morning both the North Fork and the South Fork of the Shenandoah River are clear and fishable. If you are planning on floating, the South Fork would be best and if you are planning on wading, the North Fork would be best. Be sure to bring your chest high waders. For information on access to the Shenandoah River, stop by the fly shop in Edinburg and look at our map or see my book Virginia Blue Ribbon Streams.
