Smallmouth Bass Streams Fly Fishing Report - November 5, 2024

As the smallmouth bass start moving to the deeper water (especially behind the dams) during the colder winter months, I switch to a Scientific Anglers Sonar Titan Sink Tip III fly line with a Fluorocarbon 9ft 2X leader to use on my Scott Centric 9ft 7-weight fly rod. This gives me great depth to help me swim my flies deeply. My Murray's Magnum Hog Sucker, Murray's Magnum Darter, and Murray's Magnum Chartreuse Streamer all in size 4 provide a mouthful for bigger bass. By using a kayak or small boat you can get to many areas of the river and fish as you are floating the river.  Murray's Fly Shop will be closed November 10-12 for Veterans Day. We will reopen on Wednesday November 13 at 9a.m. and resume shipping any online orders placed over the weekend.

The North Fork of the Shenandoah River is clear and fishable. Two miles north of Edinburg is Chapman's Landing which is a good access to put in and float down to the dam.  Just be prepared to paddle back upstream to take out at the same access you put in. Keep in mind most dams on the North Fork of the Shenandoah River are not legal or safe to go around so plan accordingly.  A nice area to wade is at the Lupton access of the Seven Bends State Park in Woodstock.

The South Fork of the Shenandoah River is clear and fishable. Areas near Newport, Alma and Whitehouse provide some nice water for floating. If you plan to wade (bring the chest high waders) and concentrate on Bixler Bridge Rt. 675 downstream to Fosters Landing.

The smallmouth fishing is slowing down but I continue to go as long as I can especially on these 70-80 degree days.

If you need help on access stop by the fly shop or see my book Fly Fishing the Shenandoah River for Smallmouth Bass.
