Smallmouth Bass Streams Fly Fishing Report - October 5, 2022
Share
The rains from Hurricane Ian improved our water levels on the North and South Fork of the Shenandoah River. The nice steady rains over a two day period was just what we needed. As I crossed the North Fork of the Shenandoah this morning, I thought today would be a beautiful day to be on the water. The leaves are starting to change colors, the streams are getting cooler and the bass are moving to some deeper pockets. There are often sculpin minnow populations extending into the deep pockets 30-40 feet out into the river. I find that a sinking tip line helps me catch many of the bass on a Shenk's Sculpin size 4, Murray's Madtom Sculpin size 6 and Spuddler size 6. If needed go to a Murray's Fluorocarbon Sinking 9ft 2X leader. Fish these areas thoroughly because there are often several bass feeding here.
Be sure to bring your chest high waders and enjoy a few days before the water temperatures get too cold for good fishing. As you can see in the picture, I have my wading staff with me. I find this very useful to have while wading in the deeper areas of the river. If you are unsteady on your feet or just want a little extra help while wading, I recommend stopping by the fly shop and checking them out.
SPECIAL HOURS: The fly shop will be closed October 9-11 for the holiday.
