Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - August 13, 2024
Share
The Shenandoah National Park is open to fishing. Please see the notice below from the Park service.
Recent rainfall has improved conditions resulting in lifting the fishing ban. Weather data varied between 4 and 8 inches of precipitation throughout the Park since August 8. However, Evan Childress, Chief of Natural and Cultural Resources, added, “Be gentle with the fish and the fragile environment they inhabit. The drought this summer created stressful conditions for them, so try to minimize the time they are out of the water before you release them.”
Good patterns to use are Murray's Flying Beetle size 16, Mr. Rapidan Ant size 16, and Murray's Yellow Jacket size 16. Good nymphs to use as a dropper: Copper John (Zebra) size 18, Copper John, Green size 16, Bead Head Soft Hackle Pheasant Tail size 16.
Little Stoney Creek (a native brook trout stream) west of Edinburg has decent water levels from the rains and is fishable. I would recommend coming in from FS92 off of Rt. 675. (see recommended fly list above)
Big Stoney Creek west of Edinburg has normal water levels and is fishable. Keep in mind that this stream is not stocked in the summer.
