Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - February 1, 2024

Stocked Trout Streams --The VA DWR has stocked some tiger trout in some of the streams this week. The tiger trout is a cross between a brown trout and a brookie. To see which streams where stocked, visit their website. Some of these streams are small and remote. A few of them you will have to walk into as the gate to the road is closed so you cannot just drive, park, and fish. All of the local stocked trout streams are clear and the water levels are great. Recommended flies this week include: Perdigon Nymph (French) size 12, Jigged Tungsten Bead Head Hare's Ear Nymph size 14, Mr. Rapidan Bead Head Nymph size 12. If you prefer to use streamers, the Betsy Streamer size 12 and Murray's Olive Marauder size 12.
Mountain Trout Streams -- The brook trout streams in the Shenandoah National Park are full but fishable if you come into the streams from the Skyline Drive or upper reaches of the streams. I scouted some of the streams earlier in the week on the lower reaches and it is just too much water for good fishing. Be sure to check the SNP website or social media for road closures during the winter months. On the warmer days we had last week, I had a few customers land a few brookies but nothing world shaking. It is still a little early in the season.
