Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - February 8, 2025
Share
Update for February 8, 2025 at 10a.m. The local stocked trout streams are returning to somewhat normal levels after the flooding earlier this week. As of this morning they are what I consider "full" but fishable. There is a slightly stained color which I find helpful. I would recommend fishing heavy nymphs as streamers such as the Perdigon Nymph, Barbless French Bomb and Bead Head Prince. For streamers I would recommend Murray's Tungsten Bead Marauder in size 10.

I like to use a two-nymph tandem rig with a Mr. Rapidan Soft Hackle Nymph (olive) size 12 fished below a Murray's Dark Stonefly Nymph size 12. Fish these across stream right below the riffles with a slow twitching action. Other recommended nymphs for this week include Perdigon Nymph size 12, Bead Head Prince Nymph size 12, Barbless French Bomb size 14. I have a few anglers that are using worm patterns like the San Juan size 10 and Squirmy Wormie size 10. Check the VA DWR website for updates as to which streams were recently stocked.
The native brook trout streams are still too cold for much to be occurring. I had cabin fever so bad that early this week I decided to take a ride and possibly try my luck on a wild brook trout stream. Much to my disappointment many of my favorite streams still have plenty of snow around them in the deep hollows of the mountains. Therefore I think I will wait a few more weeks and try again. Prime Time to fish these streams is April and May, which is why we schedule our fly fishing schools during this time.
