Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - January 12, 2024

The local stocked trout streams are carrying a little extra water but they are definitely fishable.  With the extra water we are using heavier flies such as the Perdigon Nymphs (Red or Frenchie) in size 12, Bead Head Prince Nymph size 12, and streamers such as the Tungsten Bead Marauder (olive or black) size 10. Use a Murray's Trout Nymphing Leader that has an indicator pre-installed to help with strike detection.  The VA DWR will continue to stock streams throughout the state so check their schedule for the latest updates.

The mountain trout streams are looking better than they have in the last six months.  I checked earlier this week on several streams and I was amazed at how much the rains helped. I am still encouraging the message from the biologist...

“Be gentle with the fish and the fragile environment they inhabit. The dry conditions likely reduced spawning success. Brook trout eggs spend the winter incubating in gravel in the streams, so it’s important to avoid walking through those areas to prevent trampling of eggs.”
Anglers are also encouraged to minimize handling and time out of the water to reduce stress on the fish.
With the extra water, the nymphs I listed above for the stocked trout will be adequate for the native brook trout streams.  I would also recommend having a Copper John in green size 14 in your fly box.
Now let's discuss some upcoming events:
