Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - January 3, 2024

Happy New Year! The local stocked trout streams are in good shape and definitely fishable.  The streams had extra pressure from anglers last week so the trout are going to make you work for it. Try to go to areas that are not right beside the road for easy access.  Instead, plan to walk to more remote areas that do not get as much pressure.  Nymphs and streamers are going to be the best flies to use.  My recommendations for this week include Casual Dress Nymph size 10,Copper John Zebra size 14, Cress Bug size 16, San Juan Worm size 10, Betsy Streamer size 12, and Murray's Marauder Black size 12. 

If you need help finding access to Big Stoney Creek west of Edinburg, Passage Creek in Edinburg and Mill Creek in Mount Jackson then stop by the fly shop. 

Now let's move onto the native brook trout streams.  The Forest Service will be closing FR92 into Little Stoney Creek this week if they haven't done so already.  This will remain closed for the next several months.  Therefore to access Little Stoney Creek you will need to go into the bottom off Millertown Road, and then walk around the reservoir.  The native brook trout streams in the Shenandoah National Park are open to fishing but be sure to check for updates on road closures on their Facebook page with the upcoming weather.  Frequently they will close the Skyline Drive in the winter because of icy road conditions. I have been using nymphs on these streams such as a Bead Head Hare's Ear size 14 and Bead Head Prince Nymph size 14.
