Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - March 8, 2023

Stocked Trout Streams -- The VA DWR is continuing to stock streams throughout the state. All of our local stocked trout streams are clear and fishable. On most streams you can keep the trout if they are in the legal size limit but if you are looking to fish a stretch of stream that is delayed harvest (cannot keep the fish) then I would suggest Passage Creek near the fish hatchery in Warren County.
The Murray's Dark Stonefly Nymph size 12, Quill Gordon Nymph size 14, Mr. Rapidan Bead Head size 14, Blue Quill Nymph size 16, and Murray's Marauder in size 12 are working well on the stocked trout streams.
Mountain Trout Streams -- The mountain trout streams have been tricky this week. Some days I am doing better than others and I'm not sure as to the reason. The Shenandoah National Park streams have good water levels by either coming in off the Skyline Drive or coming into the streams from the lower boundaries. The water temperature earlier this week was around 47 degrees. If you need help on access, stop by the fly shop or see my book Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park.
For dry flies use the Mr. Rapidan Parachute size 14, Murray's Little Dark Stonefly Dry size 14, or Blue Quill Dry size 16. For nymphs which is what I seem to be picking up most of mine on, use a Bead Head Prince Nymph size 14, Quill Gordon Nymph size 14, Mr. Rapidan Bead Head size 14 or Copper John size 14. Feel free to use a dry with a nymph as a dropper.
