Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - May 3, 2023

Mountain Trout Streams -- After the rains last week we have had to play games with water levels.  Earlier this week I went to several streams in the Shenandoah National Park and found better water levels by coming into the streams from the top or off the Skyline Drive. That's not saying you cannot fish the lower sections of the streams but you will have extra water for the next few days. Therefore I would recommend fishing with a Perdigon Nymph or Bead Head Nymph to help with the extra water.  There are many March Browns, Caddis, Sulphurs and Little Yellow Stoneflies hatching on the streams. The March Brown Dry size 14, Mr. Rapidan Delta Wing Caddis (Olive) size 16, Shenk's Sulphur size 16 and Murray's Little Yellow Stonefly Dry size 16 all match these hatches.  To fish a dry with a dropper, I would recommend a March Brown Dry with a Perdigon Nymph size 16 as a dropper.  Fish these on a 5X or 6X Murray's Mountain 6ft leader.

Stocked Trout Streams -- The VA DWR continues to stock streams throughout the State.  The rains last week improved the water levels so the trout have moved throughout the streams. Most of my customers are doing well with nymphs and streamers.  The Murray's Tungsten Marauder in size 10 sinks quickly which works well in faster moving water. The Perdigon Nymphs that I mentioned above are working well on these streams as well.
