Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - November 15, 2023

My son, Jeff enjoys fishing midges and small stoneflies as much as I do. I've often seen him fish for over two hours to feeding trout on a hundred feet of Armstrongs in Montana catching large trout the whole time. This same technique applies to the stocked trout streams in Virginia. My favorite flies for this include the Mr. Rapidan Midge Dry size 22 and Murray's Dark Stonefly Dry size 16. In some cases the trout feed just below the surface. When you detect this, attach a Perdigon (olive) size 16 to 12-inches of 7X mono and fish it as a dropper below the Stonefly Dry.  If you prefer to fish with streamers, go to a Murray's Marauder size 12 in olive or black.

Now let's move onto the brook trout streams.  The Shenandoah National Park remains closed to fishing and all fires are prohibited within the Park limits for anyone planning to camp.  They are continuing their efforts to contain a wildfire near the Central section near Syria.  All of the brook trout streams are extremely low and in need of some rain.  Prime time to fish these streams is April to early June because of water levels and hatches. Here are a few things to help you plan for next Spring.
