Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - November 19, 2024

I personally like to fish all streams as no kill so that other anglers can enjoy the trout fishing as much as I do. Here are some suggestions to help on the stocked trout streams. 1) Use artificial lures and flies with single hooks that have the barbs mashed down, 2) use a landing net and land the trout as quickly as possible, 3) handle the trout gently and return it to the stream as quickly and gently as possible. The Murray's Dark Stonefly Nymph size 12, Mr. Rapidan Soft Hackle (olive) Nymph size 12, Bead Head Prince Nymph size 12, and Jigged Squirmy Wormie size 12 are the flies that are working well this week. To see which streams have recently been stocked, visit the VA DWR website.   All of the local stocked trout streams are clear and fishable. The water is very clear so try not to scare the fish before you even have a chance at landing one.

I have many anglers calling or emailing asking about the native brook trout streams in the Shenandoah National Park.  I have seen spawning beds up till the first week of December, therefore I am still not fishing these streams at this time. If you do choose to fish these streams, be careful to not step on the spawning beds as most of them are dusted over and hard to see.

Prime time to fish the native brook trout streams is April & May. There are a few things you can do to learn more about these streams.
