Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - Update November 12, 2022
Update for November 12, 2022- Big Stoney Creek west of Edinburg is full but fishable. The rains yesterday have actually helped the stream. Passage Creek in Fort Valley is full but fishable. Some areas are experiencing some discoloration from the runoff from the little streams entering Passage Creek. I expect this to run out quickly and return to normal in a day or two.
This report is going to be in 2 parts but first let's cover our store hours for this week. We will be closed on Friday November 11 for Veterans Day but will resume our normal hours on Saturday November 12 of 9a.m. to 3p.m.
Stocked Trout Streams & Delayed Harvest Areas --- The VA DWR continues to stock streams throughout the State. Big Stoney Creek west of our fly shop was stocked last week. For updated information on which streams have been stocked, visit their website. Passage Creek in Fort Valley off of Rt. 619 has a delayed harvest section (catch and release) which was stocked about 3 weeks ago. All of our local streams are low and clear which is causing the trout to spook very easily. Hopefully we get some rain toward the end of the week that will help the stream levels. I try to find springs on the stocked trout streams and fish below these. There are many natural cress bugs that live in and below these rich springs. A Cress Bug in size 14 or 16 will work well here. The Murray's Dark Stonefly Nymph size 12 or 14 has been doing well this week as well throughout the streams. If you only prefer to use streamers, then use a Betsy Streamer size 12 or the Murray's Marauder size 10 or 12. Fish all of these on a Murray's Classic 9ft 4X leader.
Mountain Trout Streams --- The native brook trout are still spawning and most of the spawning beds are dusted over and hard to see. If you plan to fish the native brook trout streams at this time of year, just be extremely careful that you are not stepping on the spawning beds to preserve those eggs. The water levels on these streams are very low, providing some tough conditions. The Murray's Flying Beetle size 16 and Mr. Rapidan Midge size 18 are productive on a Murray's Mountain 6ft 6X leader.
