Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - October 17, 2024

All of the local stocked trout streams are in great shape. Passage Creek off of Rt. 678 in Fort Valley was stocked last week in the put and take section and the delayed harvest section. Most anglers are catching rainbows by fishing a Murray's Olive Marauder size 8. Swim the marauder along the stream bottom in water 4-5 feet deep below the fast riffles. Other streamers that work well in these areas include: Betsy Streamer size 8, Shenandoah Simple Streamer (Nine Three) size 6.  If you aren't getting these deep enough, add some split shot.

The VA DWR will continue to stock streams, so check their website for updates.

The native brook trout are spawning so I don't like to fish these streams during this time. I have had some anglers giving me reports on the streams in the Shenandoah National Park. The better water levels are by coming into the streams from the Skyline Drive or upper reaches of the streams.  The bottom sections are still carrying some extra water. Beetle and Ant patterns are recommended.

October is a busy time for the Shenandoah National Park because of the leaves changing colors, so plan accordingly and get your permits online to save time.

We are already registering anglers in our Spring 2025 Mountain Trout Fly Fishing Schools.  These are conducted in the spring when water levels and hatches are ideal. Learn more about the native brook trout fishing in the mountains.  Click for more information and 2025 dates.
