Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - October 24, 2024

Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - October 24, 2024

Anglers are getting some nice rainbows and browns by fishing the stocked trout streams in Virginia. Recommended flies for this week on the stocked trout streams: Murray's Tungsten Bead Marauder size 10 (black or olive), Jigged Squirmy Wormie size 12 and Rubber Leg Nymph size 8. All of the local stocked trout streams are clear and fishable.  Passage Creek in Fort Valley has a put and take section as well as a delayed harvest area and all of this is accessible off Rt. 678. Hawksbill Creek in Luray was stocked last week.  Click to see the stocking schedule.  UPDATE Big Stoney Creek in Edinburg was stocked 10/24/24.

The brook trout are spawning so I personally do not like to fish these streams during this time. If you desire to fish the brook trout streams, I recommend coming into the streams from the Skyline Drive or upper reaches of the streams for better water levels. Use Murray's Flying Beetle size 16, Mr. Rapidan Dry size 16, Murray's Dark Stonefly Nymph size 14, Mr. Rapidan Soft Hackle Nymph Olive size 16.

Spring 2025 On The Stream Mountain Trout Fly Fishing Schools

Learn more about the brook trout fishing in the mountains by taking one of our fly fishing schools. These are taught in the Spring when the water levels and hatches are ideal. Each school starts at 9a.m. with a classroom presentation and then proceeds to a native brook trout stream for hands on instruction until 5p.m. Fly Rod & Reel outfits are provided for the school.  Click to see more information and to register.
