Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - October 3, 2024

Let's discuss the stocked trout streams first. Big Stoney Creek west of Edinburg is clearing especially around the Columbia Furnace area.  It is what I like to call "full but fishable". Just be careful when wading. Passage Creek in Fort Valley near Elizabeth Furnace is full but fishable with a slightly "stained color". Again be cautious when wading.

Flies such as Murray's Marauder (black or pearl) size 10, Jigged Squirmy Wormie, Rubber Leg Nymph (black/tan) size 8, and Murray's Crayfish (brown) size 10 are recommended for the next week.

If you need help on access, stop by the fly shop.

The mountain trout streams in the Shenandoah National Park received over 17 inches of rain within the last month. The stream levels in the upper reaches are returning to normal levels. The brook trout are starting to spawn so I do not fish these streams from now to end of December for fear of stepping on the spawning beds. If you are planning on visiting the Shenandoah National Park for any reason, check their website for road/trail closures before traveling. The best time to fish the native brook trout streams is April and May because of ideal hatches and water levels. If you want to learn more about these streams and the native brook trout fishing, read my book Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park.
