Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - October 30, 2024

Most anglers are doing better with nymphs than anything else on the stocked trout streams but I recommend keeping a couple of streamers in your box just in case. A two fly rig is ideal for these streams. A Murray's Marauder (olive) size 8 with a Mr. Rapidan Soft Hackle Nymph (olive) size 12 OR a Rubber Leg Nymph size 8 below it as a dropper works well. Some of the rainbows are holding below the rich springs because they are loaded with natural cress bugs. Fish these very carefully with a Cress Bug size 14, 16.  Big Stoney Creek, west of Edinburg, has many of these rich springs.  Worm patterns are a favorite among anglers on the stocked trout streams. The San Juan Worm (red) size 8 is recommended. The water levels of the local stocked trout streams are getting low and are very clear so wade carefully.  To see the latest stocking schedule, visit VA DWR.

The brook trout are spawning in the Shenandoah National Park, so I personally do not like to fish these streams during this time. If you choose to fish these streams, watch that you are not stepping in the spawning beds and carefully return the trout to the stream as safely and as fast as you can. Anglers are using Mr. Rapidan Dry size 16, Spirit of Pittsford Mill size 16, Bead Head Prince Nymph size 14, Copper John Zebra Nymph size 16. The ideal times to fish these streams are in April and May as the water levels and hatches are perfect. That is when we conduct our On The Stream Mountain Trout Fly Fishing Schools.  Click to learn more and to register for Spring 2025 fly fishing school.
