Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - September 27, 2024

Early last April I decided to explore the headwaters areas of the Blue Ridge Mountains in small feeders I had never fished. I located a very old topo map that actually named some of the cabins on the top of the ridges where early settlers lived and the springs they depended upon. Naturally, some of these springs became fishable. Glancing back over my stream notes here are some spots that led me to fishable waters. Jones Cabin, Bucks Mill, Spring House cabin, Rose Falls, Snyder's Pond, Breeden's Cabin, Shipe's Pond and many more that led me to fishable feeders.

A message from the SNP as of 9/26/24

The Park has received a considerable amount of rain in some areas, resulting in localized flooding near Whiteoak Canyon boundary access parking lot (Weakley Hollow Road). Visitors should avoid traveling to this area due to rising water levels almost cresting the bridge as of this morning, 09/26. Forecasts show more rain in the upcoming days. Closures may be implemented if conditions continue to worsen.
Visitors to Shenandoah National Park should use caution: expect slick conditions and debris-such as trees, limbs, and leaves on roads and trails.
Before departing for the Park, check for weather updates and visit the Park’s webpage (www.nps.gov/shen) for current conditions or subscribe to the alert system by texting SHENALERTS to 888777 for status updates.

Update September 27, 2024.  I recommend coming into the streams from the Skyline Drive or upper regions of the streams since the Park has been receiving so much rain in certain areas. The stream levels in the Shenandoah National Park are holding up and we are getting some good brook trout fishing on Murray's Flying Beetle size 6, Mr. Rapidan Ant size 16, Murray's Moth size 16, and Murray's Housefly size 16 on a Classic 7.5ft 6X leader. By mashing the barbs down or fishing barbless hooks, we can help preserve the brook trout.  Be sure to hide your approach and don't get behind someone. What they didn't catch, they have already spooked. For more information on these streams, see my book Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park.

The brook trout will start spawning in the next month so be mindful of their beds.

On The Stream Fly Fishing School in the Mountain Trout Streams

Hard to believe but we are already registering for the "on the stream" fly fishing schools for Spring 2025.  These schools include a classroom presentation and on the stream instruction for a full day of learning.  Fly Rod & Reel outfits are provided. We conduct them in two different locations to make it easier for our customers.
