Half Day On The Stream Fly Fishing Lessons
Our Half Day Fly Fishing Lessons provide students with a basic fly fishing lesson on the Shenandoah River. You will spend your time learning to fish for smallmouth bass with a basic crash course on fly fishing.
Have you ever wanted to learn how to fly fish but don't have the equipment or a lot of time? Maybe you just want to try something new and don't know where to start. Whatever your reason, we are here to help you learn how to fly fish.
Our Half Day On The Stream Fly Fishing Lessons include one of our professional guides teaching you the basics on casting properly with a fly rod, how to read the stream and how to fish nymphs, streamers, and topwater flies. All of the instruction is conducted on the Shenandoah River. These half day lessons do not include a classroom portion.
How does it work?
You will meet your guide/instructor at Murray's Fly Shop at 9:00 a.m. on the date of your lesson. Your guide/instructor will go over the productive flies for the day.
A Virginia freshwater fishing license is necessary for these classes and can be purchased at the fly shop. (Please arrive 15 minutes early if you need a fishing license.) After a short meet and greet and discussion on tackle and flies, you will follow our guide to the Shenandoah River for a casting lesson that is held on the stream side. After the casting lesson you will enter the river and proceed with the On The Stream instruction. All fly fishing lessons end at 1:00 p.m.
What is provided?
We provide the fly rod and fly reel outfit for you to use for the lesson plus the fly fishing instruction. If you have your own fly rod and reel outfit you are welcome to use your own or if you would like to purchase an outfit to use for the day we have many options to fit your budget. Either way, you are welcome to use our outfits during your lesson.
What is not provided?
We do not provide waders, wading gear, wading staff, snips or pliers. We normally conduct these lessons in the summer time (mid-June to September) when the water is warm enough to wade wet (wading shoes). However if you are taking a lesson in May, early June or in September then we do recommend chest high waders. Hip boots are not adequate for wading in the Shenandoah River.
We strongly encourage wearing hard sole fishing boots. We do not recommend open toed sandals, flip flops or aqua socks. Long pants are recommended but not required for wading the Shenandoah River.
Flies are not included in the cost of these lessons. You may bring your own flies or our instructor will be happy to make suggestions prior to your lesson based on the water conditions and what is working best at that time of the year. Come prepared to fish. If you have tackle (i.e. snips, pliers, forceps, hemostats, split shot) of your own, bring it. All of these items are available for purchase.
Food and drinks are not provided. We encourage you to bring bottled water and snacks.
You are responsible for providing your transportation to and from the river.
The cost of a fishing license is not included. You may purchase a Virginia Freshwater Fishing License at the fly shop (please arrive 15 minutes early) or online at gooutdoorsvirginia.com
